Joy In The Wilderness
The events of Holy Week continue to unfold….
On the Church Calendar, today is Maundy Thursday. As Jesus' Passion is revealed, this day is marked and remembered by two significant events ~ washing of the disciples' feet and the Lord's Supper.
While gathered together, Jesus removed his outer garment, donned a towel and began washing the feet of his beloved. {Mind you, the very people who would betray, deny, and abandon him in just a few short hours!} Of course, washing feet is not what a Rabbi did; washing feet was the job of the lowest servant in the household. And yet, that is what Jesus does.
After this act of love and care, Jesus makes it clear that his example is for all of us to follow. 'Do as I have done', Maundy Thursday reminds us. Serving others is a central aspect of this life in Christ.
But there is another gift still to come, Holy Communion ~ also known as Eucharist. Jesus takes simple elements of bread and wine. He blesses them and then gives them for all to eat, 'this is my body and this is my blood; these are given and shed for you. Whenever you celebrate this Holy Meal, I am among you.'
Every Sunday, when we gather for worship, these two commands are lived out as we gather to be fed with Word and Sacrament in order to be sent back out into the world to serve as we have been called and empowered.
May the imprint of Holy Week mark your spirit.
