Joy In The Wilderness
Hope shines
I started my workday with a poem from one of you; it is a composition of hope shining into the bleak mid-winter. 'Bleak' certainly holds ample space in 2020 … but we are now only a few hours away from 2021.
This week we will celebrate the 2nd Sunday of Christmas and we will do so with the 'nativity' according to the gospel of St. John. As it turns out, John's nativity goes much further back than Luke's; John opens his gospel with 'In the beginning'. From that vantage point, this gospel writer poetically articulates the relationship of God, Word and Light. It is from this section of the bible that we are blessed with the promise that the Light shines into the darkness and the darkness cannot overpower it.
Dark. Hard. Bleak. These are probably some of the most polite ways to describe the year that is drawing to a close. And while just a blip on a calendar, tomorrow we will greet a new year, one that is brimming with possibilities, with hope that shines Light into the dark places.
