Joy In The Wilderness

Musings and ponderings by Pastor Leah Stolte-Doerfler

Beauty in diversity

I've had some really great conversations recently ~ the sort where folks who see the world differently sit together and share deeply and respectfully. In the times in which we live, having differing voices at the table is gift; it is grace.

Yes, we live in circumstances that allow us to construct echo chambers, such that we can order our lives until we only hear like-minded points of view … the only people included look like us, think like us, process like us. Yet, it is when we incorporate variety that we have greater capacity to hear and learn; almost certainly our decision-making and problem-solving will even become broader and more profound.

Oak Street Church has a sign posted out in front: 'How does diversity make Silverton great?' The question begins with the premise that diversity is a good attribute; then, it invites us to wonder how and why.

Like the poppies in the picture, diversity adds color and texture and interest. I am expanded as I fully listen to the story or the mind of someone whose path is other than my own. Furthermore, being diverse peoples gathered is Kingdom of God lived out.

Last week, our Pentecost readings included Ezekiel, when God brings life and hope to an entire valley of dead bones. Life and breathe is given to all. Likewise, in the Acts reading, each person hears the Good News in their own language. All were included. 'All-ness' abounding!

As these thoughts were floating about, this language was shared with me from one of your kiddos, 'When not everyone is invited to the table, we don't sit at that table. We eat on the floor with everybody' ~ a Jesus-inspired-diversity-picnic.

Amen?

Amen!
